Please help.
In the following sentence should the word "market" be singular or plural?

"American companies are still unfamiliar with Bulgaria's market/markets."

The sentence in question is a translation into English. The writer meant "overall Bulgarian economic/trade market" in his source language. I translated it using "market". A friend, who is a native speaker, told me that the singular "market" sounds too poetic in that sentence and suggested me to use "markets" instead. As a non-native speaker I cannot figure out why the singula
