mark up

When watching a soccer game, I thought I heard a coach yelled 'Mark up! Mark up!' at his players when his opponent had gotten the ball. It seemed to me he was instructing his players to get to their intended positions. If I didn't misheard the words, what exactly did 'mark up' mean?

Not being a soccer player, the best I can give you is that "Mark" could be one of the player's names.

Thanks very much for trying Vorpar; however, the players were all girls. I can only guess either I misheard, or 'mark up' isn't all that commonly used in this kind of situation, therefore I don't have to learn this phrase?!

When you 'mark' someone during a sport it means that you are paired with a player of the opposite team and it is your job to generally get in their way, tackle them, stop them getting the ball etc. I guess he was telling them to get back to their opponent and concentrate!

probably "advance up to the opponent and mark him/check him"

Peace on all ..

This is my first particpation in Non-Arabic forums as I'm not native speaker of the English

language ..

So I want -- hopefully -- no one to laugh at me if I make any small or even fatal mistakes ...

Eagle,
you made yourself seen pretty well. If it were my first post, I'd stick to the style all other people use. No need for huge letters and stark colors.

Dear Nona and Marius,

The players did seemingly go 'guard' their paired opponents after the coach's 'Mark up' call. Thanks very much for answering my question.

Warm regards, SpongeBarb

Ooops! Thank you too, Eagle. I guess you guys in Egypt also call soccer 'football', eh?
