Marine term

I need assistance on the term, "liquid strips". It is from a 1960s text and refers to when boats started getting modified for increased speeds by mounting them on "water skiis".

The context is, "For instance, they've just made a breakthrough on planing hulls with liquid strips. They learned all this from this tremendous upsurge of water skiiing that's been going on."

Thanks.

Hi, I have no idea. Is the term not explained elsewhere in the text? I wonder if there is some refernce to strips of fibreglass, which are applied in a wet state.
