Marine research motivational letter

Hey guys,

This website has been of great help but I will appreciate any direct corrections and suggestions. Thank you.
To whom it may concern,

With this letter I would like to show my interest in the xx starting in September 2017.

I received my bachelor degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography from the xx in July 2015. During my first academic year, I was impressed, that, despite technology advancements and research efforts throughout the world, there remains much to learn about the oceans. With current rate of climate change and the buffering role of the oceans, more focus is needed to make sure future generation do not face the fierce power of climate change events.

The opportunity to work with scientists, teachers and students from so many different nationalities and diverse expertise is unique to this program. The numerous teaching approaches and the collaboration with a variety of institutions also appeals to me. The range of specialization pathways is also greatly distinctive and it would allow me to have a personally-tailored study plan. My research interests are focused on phytoplankton and global biogeochemistry cycles coupled with climate change. Another great aspect of the program is the mobility. With four leading research institutions in their own marine expertise, I am confident that I will gain first-class education and experience of cutting edge technologies and ??.

My academic curriculum provided me a solid knowledge of the different theoretical subjects implied in a research project, and the capacity to integrate different disciplines: biological and chemical, ocean dynamics and ecological processes, as well as marine organism’s physiology, genetics and behaviour. I carried my final year dissertation on phytoplankton bloom events coupled with climate change using satellite images with a focus on the Celtic sea. This helped me understand the implications of bloom development for the higher trophic levels, such as zooplankton, fish and consequently humans.

Scientific research is vitally important in understanding ocean processes, however, social interest and awareness is essential in helping to conserve and protect these fragile environments. With regards to this, I investigated the aquariums role in raising awareness of contemporary issues, such as ocean acidification and deoxygenation. I realised that, due to its remoteness, people have very little contact with ocean and thus more communication is needed to help people understand and care about current issues more.

As a part of cultural travelling this year, I visited Marine research station in Palawan, Philippines. This experience was eye-opening, as I was introduced to completely different facilities and methods in marine research. I have also seen the social challenges of distributing the scarce resources and the fast approaching effects of climate changes in this fragile region.

I believe I am the ideal candidate for this program because of my genuine passion and enthusiasm for the subject, as well as my international experience.

A story about discovering a new species of whales this year reminded me how vast the ocean is and how little we know what lies beneath it. So by enrolling to this program I would like to contribute to the research and conservation of the oceans, which many livelihoods and wellbeing depend on.

I will be available for an interview at any time. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me, I very much look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours Faithfully,
Silvia Georgieva
