Mar

Hello!

My question is about the verb: mar.
Do I get it right when I think it can be used to ruin an object, a party, a demonstration, a beauty view of something etc, so it is basically the act that affects something in a negative way, so that it becomes totally useless or it's condition deteriorates?

Top answer

Mar means more to make something less perfect, but not to destroy it. Her skin was flawless; she had not a single pimple or blemish to mar her face. Polishing with a rough cloth can mar the finish on the furniture.

  • The loud music marred the tranquility of the park that afternoon.
