Many VS several

What's the difference between Many and several? and how can I make a sharp destination between the two to see the difference?

Generally speaking, "several" would mean more than two but less than six. "Many" would mean more than six. For example:


He's had several (three to five) girl friends.


He's had many (six or more) girlfriends.

Many = dozens, or hundreds or thousands or millions.

Several = maybe three to ten

There were many cars in the parking lot. Several were destroyed by a fire that started in one of them. Nobody was hurt because the owners were shopping. Many more might have been damaged, but the fire department responded very quickly and put out the blaze.

I don't think you can. 'several' is less than 'many', of course.

You could try studying these sentences with both 'several' and 'many'. Maybe you'll find the contrast you're looking for.
