Some propose to levy a higher tariff on sugary products because when higher taxes on sugary food and drinks, producers have to raise product prices result in people would consume less. The same policy has been used effectively with tobacco, fewer people smoked when cigarette prices were made to rise. People hope the same is to happen in the case of sugar. Nevertheless, I believe this policy will not work in practice. Unlike tobacco, sugar is not only harmless if it is consumed in moderation but also has many beneficial effects. It is an element that aids stimulate people’s appetite and is the main ingredient in the food and beverage industry. Therefore, more costly sugary product prices can detrimentally affect the survival of the confection sector. Furthermore, for people on a tight budget, buying sweet snacks becomes out of reach. In addition, there are more effective ways to decrease the consumption of sugary goods. Government should educate the public about the danger of excessive sugar consumption and it is the best start from school. Children often love to eat candy with high sugar content. If children can learn about the health risks of sugar use, they will avoid overeating leads to health issues later. In conclusion, my view is that sugar products should not be made more expensive so that customers can afford them and have better ways to assist people to reduce their sugar intake.
