Many factories have closed down

Many factories have closed down because of the economic recession.

Hi,
Is "down" in the above optional or better left out? Thanks.

down is optional, but I'd keep it. It's more emphatic, more final. Many fatories and shops simply close (not close down) every night, but this is a different, more permanent kind of closure.
