Which of the following is correct?

1.

A.There were many different kinds of dinosaur and a number of them used to live in .

B. There were many different kinds of dinosaur and a number of them used to live in .

I assume 1B should read "dinosaurs ". In my opinion, 1A and 2A are correct (in respect of the difference you are asking about), and 1B and 2B are inferior. It seems a bit odd to say that dinosaurs "used to live in China" since China did not exist at that time.

The singular entity is "a kind of dinosaur" (for example). You would not say "a kind of dinosaurs". When this is pluralised, the thing that is plural is logically "kind". There is no reason why pluralising "kind" should affect the word "dinosaur".
