ManU Boycott
I see that the Manchester United fans have called a boycott on the team's sponsors to register their displeasure over ManU not being locally owned. The sponsors that will be boycotted are United's main sponsors: Nike, Vodafone, Budweiser, Pepsi, Audi and Fuji. Evidently, they are not boycotting any local sponsors.
I was dumbstruck noticing "Budweiser" on this list. I was under the impression that Budweiser was generally shunned by all but the young and trendy in the UK. I can't imagine a ManU fan ordering a pint of Bud.
My assumption is that they are refusing to purchase a product that they would otherwise refuse to purchase. It seems that it would very difficult to judge the effectiveness of the boycott.
When the initial flap arose over Glazer's ownership of controlling interest in United, there were a number of fears expressed by United fans about what negative effects this ownership might result in. I would think that one of the fears would be that Glazer might go after an American product like Budweiser for sponsorship. It would be an embarrassment for a United fan to participate in anything that promoted something like Budweiser as a beer of choice.
However, it seems that Budweiser was a major sponsor of United before Glazer became involved. Strange people, these Brits.
