Manchesters?

Question

There's a series running here now on BBC America called "Red Cap". (1) In tonight's episode, mention was made of the Manchesters at the Somme. Why are the men of the Manchester Regiment the Manchesters and not the Mancurians?

It's a good series, but I see the camel's nose under the tent in BBC productions. One of the differences between British television and American television has always been that British television casts women in parts that seem realistic for the role, and American television casts women with tits. Tamzin Outhwaite (Melanie in EastEnders) seems a good enough actress, but one is never without the thought that this is a very good looking woman anytime she's on screen. Physically, she doesn't seem right for the role. It's a departure from the Helen Mirren casting concept.

Outhwaite has an extremely pretty face. I'm not sure that's a requirement for **** stars.

You mean "Mancunians". And they're not called "Mancunians" because many of them aren't. In a way it's similar to how sportspeople from the Slovak Republic are called "Slovakians", not "Slovaks", since 10% of the population is Hungarian.

I am tempted to agree with you that 'Manchester's' is an error and that 'Manchesters' is the correct form. The Regimental Museum site is, presumably, a reliable authority on this subject?

I would say that was an error. The Manchester Regiment was formed in the late C19 by the amalgamation of the 63rd and 96th Regiments of Foot and existed until 1958 when it was amalgamated with The King's Regiment (Liverpool), to form The King's Regiment (Manchester and Liverpool). As you will see from the Regimental Museum at http://www.army.mod.uk/ceremonialandheritage/museums/details/m012manc.htm the style of abbreviation is 'The Manchesters', not 'The Manchester's'. It's a traditional way of referring to regiments named after places. And anyway, they might not be Mancunians, whereas they are all Manchesters.

In the same manner, the BBC has a Europe correspondent and a Wales correspondent, in case they are African and Scottish.
