"manage to"

I am still unclear about the usage of “manage to”.
What does it means by “manage to ” here. Does it mean “to plan to”, “to try to”“to have a hard time to” or ”has succeed to”.
“She did not like the food but she managed to choke it down.”
And when the following sentences carry the same meaning in case they are with no “manage to”, like “She did not like the food but she choke it down.”
