Man of letters

Hi, I have a question here. I know that a “man of letters” means “a male writer, especially one who writes novels or writes about literature”.

My question is, does “man of letters” have a more positive sense than “writer” / a complimentary way to refer to a writer? Or is it only a term for formal text (rarely used in casual talks)? And is there a counterpart for female writers?

Thanks!!
