Man as mankind, collective noun?

Hi,

Am I constructing these four sentences correctly?

1.Mankind realizes that it really needs God.
2.Mankind realize that they really need God.
3.Man realize that they really need God.
4.Man realizes that he really needs God.

I know that "mankind" can be paired with either sing or pl. noun; "man", however I am so sure.

Thanks in advance, AL
