Man/ a man

Hello,

I would like to ask you, if in the following sentence "a man" means "a male" or rather "human":

"He had one of those voices you can hear across a running brook, but he had a nice set of wrinkles around his eyes and he looked straight at a man, this man, and shook his hand..."
