Mamma or mamma

In an English manuscript, the author calls his mother "mamma," which is used as a proper noun, but the author insists it is an Italian word that's never capitalized in Italian. I feel it should be capitalized in English because of how it is being used.anyone know what is correct in this case

I f it's used as her name. I would say it should be capitalized in English. But we usually allow authors a lot of freedom in their work.
