Males or females are excluded from certain professions_right or wrong

Question (Collins - Writing for Ielts, Unit 1):

Women and men are commonly seen as having different strengths and weaknesses. Is it right to exclude males or females from certain professions because of their gender?

Answer:

It is commonly believed that women and men possesses their different strengths and weaknesses. Some would argue that males and females should not engage some specific occupations which are just set aside for the rest gender. Others hold a belief that there is no job limitation for both genders. In my view, I am more in favor of the former because of some following reasons.

The first reason is cost saving. With a job advertisement, you as an employer can recruit a person to a vacancy regardless of their gender. Initially, with a full training from your side, he/she is able to handle their job much well. Nevertheless, he/she gives up the job some months later. In societies, occupation groups are classified by gender, age, experience and other kinds of criteria. We should respect this classification for cost saving. For example, room keeper is often for women because the requirement of carefulness and patience is the strengths of women, not men. You can select a man to do this job but he is unlikely to commit long-term employment. Therefore, your recruiting and training cost is a waste of money.

Another reason is work productivity. This is the number of products or services made by employees in a fixed period of time. Every employer would like to facilitate this as high as possible so that they often search for feasible methods to address this. And, one of these methods is to locate an employee to a suitable position which is able to utilize their strengths. In other words, employees should not be assigned jobs which hinder their outstanding skills. For instance, as statistic, a female sewing worker produces double a male one does. Besides, they can work more over time than their male colleagues because of their durability.

In conclusion, in order to save costs as well as to increase work productivity, gender priority in some certain jobs should be taken into consideration once employers fill vacancies.
