Making hypothesis

Good evening.

Is the expression 'making hypothesis' regularly used in spoken English?

Is there a more frequent and less 'academic' alternative?

Thank you.

P.S. I'm thinking of the following use: 'Let's make some hypothesis about the reason why that has happened.'

No, it's not a natural expression. Say eg Let's try to figure out why that has happened.
