It came about in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with the popularisation of psychodynamic psychology by Freud. Today, however, it is often regarded as a multidisciplinary approach. The rationale of the essay is to argue why psychology may not be regarded as a scientific discipline. This essay addresses this rationale in two parts. The first part explains what psychology is by reference to the wider literature. The second part critically assesses for and against arguments from this literature in relation to the rationale outlined above.
