make/hold a demostration

Hi,

Today while I was talking with my instructor I said something like this " I think, they are going to make a demostration".
I meant they are going to protest. But afterwards I felt uneasy with to make a demostration and look it up in the dictionary and learnt that it's supposed to be to hold/stage a demostration. I always make these sort of mistakes and I hate it! Could you please tell me did I sound really awkward? I wonder what a native speaker would think about it.

In the case of a protest march, we usually hold or stage a demonstration. Make is understood, but it sounds odd. Now, if you were going to show people how to make cookies, you would probabluy do or give a demonstration.

Thanks a lot Philip! By the way I have realized that I mispelled the word "demonstration".

Really awkward? No. A little awkward, but understandable. A native speaker would think that you're not a native speaker of English. That's not the end of the world. No harm done.
