make up or think up

Could you please help me to choose? And explain to me the reason.
I think both are applicable, but then again, "think up" is consisted of planning and thinking about flows, but "make up" is more casual and fitting for situation.
"We need to made up/think up a good excuse if we're not going to go to Sheila's party."

Hi, There's not much difference. I see 'think up' as slightly more casual. Even more casual is 'dream up'.

There's not much difference.
