Make them responsible

Is tis natural to say "make them responsible" as in teach them to become responsible?

As a coach, I am not on their case 24/7. I try to make them responsible/give them a sense of responsibility. (make them responsible, is that correct?)

Would you phrase differently or is it correct to say "I try to teach my kids to become responsible" ?

Thank you
