Make the national team - make it to the national team

If they are both correct, do the following sentences mean the same thing?

1) I don’t think that player will make (be selected for/be picked for/be chosen for) the national team.

2) I don’t think that player will make it to (be selected for/be picked for/be chosen for) the national team.

If so, which would you use?

Also, are the alternatives in brackets correct?
