Hi, I have 2 questions, here they are : 1/I was watching friends and in the episode, ross is buying a couch with rachel and he says to the salesman : "I want to make sure I bought the right couch" Why does he use a past tense? why not say "I want to make sure I buy/I'm buying the right couch" ? He could say what you suggest, but what he is thinking here is that he wants to feel sure at a future point (ie after he buys it) that he bought the right one.
