Make sure + verb tense

hi ! I have 2 questions, here they are :

1/I was watching friends and in the episode, ross is buying a couch with rachel and he says to the salesman : "I want to make sure I bought the right couch"

Why does he use a past tense? why not say "I want to make sure I buy/I'm buying the right couch" ?

2/ which one is correct ?

she sits in the back of the classroom or she sits at the back of the classroom

thank you for your help!

He could say what you suggest, but what he is thinking here is that he wants to feel sure at a future point (ie after he buys it) that he bought the right one.
