John and James hadn't been friends since school, but they lived quite close to each other in the small town of Burly, and saw one another out and about a couple of times a week at least. When the snowfall came, they found themselves stranded on the same stretch of road leading back to their homes. All of the people on that road had to abandon their cars because the snow had made it impossible to drive. There was a crowd of about 100 people all huddled together walking home that night. John and James were part of that crowd, although their warm winter clothes, and the poor visibility of the snowfall, made it difficult for them to see a few feet in front, let alone seeing others around them.
