Make out to

The movie is about two British men and 2 American men.

How would you correctly say what the director did?

- The director of the movie made the 2 British out to get along together and made them out to look socially awkward. He made the 2 American look cool.

Thanks

Hi
thanks for the correction Clive.
I had always heard "make someone out to look"
Never had I heard "make out that they look"
Is that standard or do people use
make someone out to look?

thank you very much

Tom made out that Mary was a movie star. He made it seem that she was a movie star.
Tom made Mary out to be a movie star. Similar to the above.

The above phrases do not work well when you are using 'look'.
