Make or makes

Should make or makes be used and please explain why, as it is one of the cases that both sound correct?

We want to make sure it makes or make sense.

Should the word 'data' be followed by a singular or plural word. For example:

Our data suggest or suggests...
Data is or are important in research.

I almost always see 'is'.
I only see 'are' in some academic, technical and scientific contexts.

There is some good evidence and data that data has established itself as a mass noun ....for most people, "data is" is the most natural way to speak.

However, in a university/scholarly paper, using "data are", rather than "data is" leaves no scope for error.

The reason: some stickler professors and pedantic scholars believe that, logically, if datum is an English word for a sing
