Make or give an impression

First question-give or make

I am studying a word 'impression.'

"It's critical that I give people a good first impression of myself. That may be the last chance I have to make a good impression."

I've had hard time figuring out the differences between these two.

I've looked them up, but so far nothing.

I've found some dictionaries with examples but no explanations.

Is this just a matter of choice or not?

If not, I would really appreciate it if you let me know the use of these two.

Second question

Sb asked me if it sounds ok to say like "The actor made a very good impression on me." after watching a movie.

I thought "His acting was so impressive or I was impressed by his performance." sounds better because the actor didn't do it to impress me, but I am not sure.

Thanks in advance.

The phrase "a good first impression" is typically used as in the following: When you meet someone you've never met before, he should come away with a good first impression of you. When you meet someone new, you should make sure his first impression of you is a good one. The word "impression" is used for people you meet in person, so you wouldn't use it for an actor you saw in a movie.
