make one's way

I have found on TedTalks one sentense which I don't understand. The problem is meaning of "were making their way". See:
On that day, a column of American and Afghan troops were making their way through a part of Afghanistan to help protect a group of government officials, a group of Afghan government officials, who would be meeting with some local village elders.

Make way is something like create a space on the road, but this is not the case. Thanks for your comments!

thanks, but is there any chance to rephrase this sentense? I'm still not sure about the correct meaning. thanks.

It basically means "going" -- walking, marching, driving, whatever. It suggests a bit more difficulty than simply "going" -- maybe there's a lot of traffic, or the roads are in bad condition, or something else is slowing down their progress.
