Make of or make from gold?

Hey guys, I was asked in an English test this morning that an object is made "of" gold or made "from" gold. So which is the correct ones?

Both are possible but I'd say that "of gold" is quite a bit more common.

Usually it is "of gold"

The necklace is made of gold and silver.

But when the gold is mixed in with other metals, you can say "from gold."
US coins used to be made from gold, silver, or copper, but the metal was not pure.
