Make me look vs make me out to look

How would you correctly phrase this? Which is correct if any?

Don't make me look stupider than I actually am.

Don't make me out to be stupider than I actually am.

Thanks

1. This would be okay with "stupider" replaced by "more stupid." The meaning is: "Don't make me look less intelligent than I actually am."

2. This would be okay with "stupider" replaced by "more stupid." The meaning is: "Don't judge me as less intelligent than I actually am."

"Stupider" sound a bit clunky in this context. "To be more X" is a better fit.
