Because, in your example, 'appear' is an infinitive.



Many verbs can be followed by the infinitive. With some, you use the infinitive with 'to', with some you use the infinitive without 'to'.

make, let, have, and help all use the same pattern. Leave the second verb alone! No s!

make it appear
let it happen
have them clean the sink

help him do the work

You can change the first verb, but not the second:

makes it vanish
lets it go
had them write letters
helped
