Make half as much as he makes?

Hi,

I have already posting this once, but for some reason I can't access the thread. So I'm posting again.

Is the word "what" in the following sentence out of place?

I earn half as much as what he earns.

Thank you!

I noticed you used "does" instead of "earns". Is there a particular reason for that, or is it just a matter of style?

Do is usually used to avoid repeating a verb:
I read more than he does.

Do you like him?
Yes, I do.
