Could somebody please explain the differences (if any) between the two phases?
Assuming the two phrases are not 100% interchangeable, could somebody please give me a few examples (contexts) where one of the phrases works just fine while the other would sound unnatural/unusual, etc.?
To give someone the eye can mean to ogle them, but it can also mean to glower at them. In the "ogle" sense, the recipient does not have to know you're eyeing them. The "glower" sense is usually expressed now as "giving someone the evil eye", I think.
