make an enquiry of

Hi! I've come across such a phrase "to make an enquiry of sb" e.g. here http://casasusegad.com/dialogue/terms-of-trade/ Why is it of? That makes no sense to me. I would expect "about" or "into", but why is it "of"? Is the meaning different? Dictionaries do not help.

"to make an enquiry of sb" means to ask somebody about something, not to ask about somebody. This pattern is mostly used in formal writing. It may even sound a bit old-fashioned.
