make a small hole into/at/in the bottom

Use a pin to make a small hole into/in/at the bottom of the egg before you boil it.

I would use "in" but "at" would word too. "into" sounds odd to me.

Thanks, GG.

I agree with you, but the original, a line from an English textbook, uses "into" and this confuses me very much.

How does one tell the top of an egg from the bottom?

I suppose the larger part of the egg is the bottom, no? But then, will it make any difference at all if you make the hole at the top instead?

"Into" is OK, shows the direction of penetration/motion.

Would YOU say it? Would you say "Make a hole into the bottom of the egg"?

'In' is locational preposition. 'Into' is directional preposition.

Make a hole in the bottom of an egg. (locational).

Drill into a thick wall to search for the two wires. Where are the wires? Inside the wall, so we need to drill through it. (directional).
