Make a point of

Hi.

In

"the new world champion made a point of never allowing him a return match."

May I replace 'made a point of' with 'attempted to'/'tried to'?

Thanks in advance!

The reason why a language as different words and verbal phrases such as
tried to
was determined to
made a point of

...is because they are not simply 'interchangeable': they each have a different shade and nuance of meaning.

The world champion was in a good position, so he could get what he really wanted.
"made a point of" means that he was determined not to allow a return match and he succeeded in doing so.

The new world champion = Alekhine, who had already won the title from Capa,( him refers to Capa-I simplified the senetence, only gave the part after the comma)Capa continue to take part in tournaments, hoping to get another shot at Alekhine3, who made a point of never allowing him a re-match
