Make A cups of tea

Regarding the sentence: Tom made his mother cups of tea.

How does this sentence sound to you? How many cups of tea do you think Tom made for his mother? A lot of cups? Or does it simply say he made more than one cup of tea? Besides, can we say that putting some determiner (like "a few" or "several") before "cups" is preferable?
