Majortests Question

Hi,

I really, really want to speak perfect grammar, but it seems that the most comprehensive book out there only covers about 1% of all the grammar rules in English.

This is a question that I have found on majortests.com:

The archivist had not only a deep interest but also a clear understanding of the historical documents in the museum. No error.E

I know the correct answer to this question is to replace interest with interest in. So where is that located in the grammar book? How in the world am I suppose to be able to speak great grammar when there are millions of rules and grammar books only cover a small percentage of them.

Thanks

I'm very sorry that you are so frustrated and concerned. Consider this. Most native speakers who have very good English have learned it through years of reading good English.

I don't know where you got that idea. Most sound grammars will cover nearly all the rules of the language used by the majority of native speakers.

What no grammar can cover is how every single word collocates with other words, An

Thanks Clive for understanding. Thanks to this post, one of the responders was able to give me a reference to an online dictionary that would help out with surrounding a word with the correct prepositions.

Thanks again.

WoW!

This is very helpful. I was looking for something like this. I know that grammar books would be tens of thousands of pages if they had to include the millions of grammar rules. I was just frustrated that they didn't point me to a dictionary like this as a reference. Thanks for the help.
