Major role is indicating what?

i have problem with this word.important role?I know important is adjective and role is what ?For example,this sentence.They play as important roles in this movie or they play as important role in this movie.Which sentence is correct?shouls the 's' added the back of role?And this case should the 's' added back of the word?Example,She plays as important role in this movie or She plays as important roles in this movie?Please help me.Thank you very much
