Grammar

maize seed, kernel

kernel = the whole seed of the maize plant.

It is one of meaning of the word kernel from a dictionary. I want to know why the word "whole" is used here. Does that mean the maize plant seed has many parts?

Could you give me that picture?

When I put "maize seed" on Google search box, I couldn't quite get what I want.
