Mainly on present continuous use

Hi. Please tell me if the present continous tenses are used correctly.

1. There were two rooms on this floor. He went into one room and people were talking to each other. He went into the other room and people were drinking. After checking out both rooms, he then procceded home.

2. He has two brothers. One brother is living in XXX and the other brother is living in YYY. They both go to college and hold part-time jobs.

I am sorry but could you help me with this too? Would you say the phrase "or not" is optional here?

I couldn't tell whether/if he lives here (or not?).
I don't know whether he lives here (or not).
