"Magic Eye" Stereograms

In the lab where I get my blood drawn (to see if I have too much rat poison flowing in my veins), they've got one of these "magic eye" stereograms hanging on the wall that is supposed to be a picture of dinosaurs. Of course I can't see the dinosaurs... I've never seen anything in those "magic eye" pictures. Just a lot of blotchy colors to me.

So, I was wondering, maybe this would be a good way to show how mentally ill people see the world. They don't see what's in the picture just unconnected blobs that don't mean anything. Imagine what the world would be like if everything was an undecipherable stereogram.

Then, while writing this, I thought that it might be fun to have a story based around someone who doesn't see what he's supposed to see in the stereograms he sees much scarier things. And he wonders, why in the hell do people draw this kind of stuff. But then every stereogram is a continuation like a mural cut into to pieces and he has to put them back together before... ?
But I seem to have digressed. Does anyone else not see what you're supposed to see in "magic eye" stereograms? Or have you even heard of them? I think they were popular a decade or two ago. (Which is about the time that the magazines in my lab came out.)

I know the sterograms you speak of, though I didn't know that's what they are called - I just know them as the "magic eye" pictures. It took me a long, long time before I got the trick of seeing

I think the Magic Eye is a type of stereogram supposedly the first stereograms existed in the 1800s. (At least that's what Wikipedia tells me.)

Aha! So everyone does just pretend they see something. I knew it!

Well, except for Steven but he's probably just trying to throw us off of the trail.

I can see them but what I've been told is that a certain number of people, even those who have otherwise normal eyesight, aren't able to perceive the third dimension as such, at all.

Interesting, I didn't know any of that. I can see 3-D movies with glasses, so it's probably just knowing where or how to focus (or unfocus) the eyes right for the "magic eye"
