Made VS. made up

I have heard that "I made some sentences" and "I made up some sentences" and I do not think there is much difference in meaning between them. Also, I made up a story and I made a story. I think "up" there means "completely". That's why they are interchangeable so often. What do you think? Thank you as usual and have a good day.
