Made varsity

Here is the dialogue:
"Can you just shoot (play basketball) with me for, like, half an hour? "
"You're in ninth grade. You made varsity. I've helped you all I can help you, kid."

"But I missed two foul shots last night-- two!"

I do not quit understand what does it mean by saying "you made varsity." Please help. Thanks.
