Made of/from/with

Hello, is there any strict rule on when to use which. I mean the prepositions which can follow the passive form of make. I have a vague vision of a rule saying that 'made of' refers to the material something is erm... made of; 'made from' gives the information about the 'raw material' that was used in order to be transformed into something else and finally 'made with' opens a list of ingredients that were used in making something. Is that really so? thanks, mike

Hi Mike, I'm not certain that there is any standard rule, although the one you suggest seems to be a reasonable 'rule of thumb' Personally, as a BrE speaker, I never use "made from", but it is heard. Interestingly, while briefly searching Google, I came up with litle , other than a mention that a student had based her PhD in Applied Linguistics on research into this. html)

"My wedding ring is made of plastic."

"Made from" is used to identify materials that were transformed in some way in order to produce the material or object being discussed:

"Plastic is made from petroleum products."

"Made with" is used to identify materials that are used in the manufacturin
