I think there's a slight difference: does the material change a lot in the process of manufacture?

If yes, then "from" is more usual..

- Cheese is made from milk

- This plastic is made from petroleum

The use of "of" in those examples wouldn't be so good, I think

If the material does not change, then I think either word is OK..
