Text:
By the end of the Vietnam War, war had become regular television fodder and the atrocities and tragedies of conflict had become everyday viewing for many people across the world. Conflict was spectacle. In terms of war art this has resulted in two largely distinct bodies of work. The first panders to war art’s troubling kinship with aspects of pornographic imagery by emphasizing war’s brutality and presenting it as performance. The other evinces moral outrage that such things should be allowed to happen. Both these approaches are countered by reflective and at times elegiac pieces that have grief and mourning as their centres. The range of materials used is wide and encompasses painting, installation, and photomontage.
As we have seen in Chapter 6, most contemporary British war artists work through the Imperial War Museum’s Artistic Records Committee (founded in 1972 and renamed the Art Commissions Committee in 2001) or find their pieces purchased sometimes by the museum and other collecting institutions such as the Tate Gallery. When Angela Weight was keeper of art at the Museum (1982–2005), her involvement in contemporary art practice in Britain made any such division porous. Commissioned artists might go to any military theatre where British forces were participating, from bases in England to South America. They have generally experienced direct engagement with their subjects, having obtained the necessary permissions.
