Dear teachers,

I am a Malay girl in Malaysia. I have heard my boss say such words as below.

Question 1:

Can you make yourself understood in French?

Is the sentence above an another way of asking "Do you understand French words?"

Question 2:

Some of us speak English. Others can speak French.

I have tried to rephrase the above into one compound sentence, just like:

Some of us speak English; others French.

Could I leave out the verbs in the second part of the compound sentence, because they are the same as the verbs in the first part of the compound sentence.

I am much obliged to you for your help.

Thanks.
