i have an essay and it's a response to the question: If a leader decided to become Machiavellian and follow the guidelines established in Machiavelli's book The Prince, what would be the impact on the Italian city-states politcally, socially, and economically during the Renaissance?

During the 1500’s in , the Renaissance flourished throughout . In this time Niccolo Machiavelli, wrote his political guide to ruling and maintaining power, The Prince. He dedicated his masterful work to one of the Medici’s, Lorenzo the Magnificent. Although Machiavelli’s social and economic suggestions prove useful, ultimately his political ideas provides greater aid to maintaining power.

One of the very important social suggestions that Machiavelli describes, is that it is better to feared than loved by his subjects. If a prince shows too much compassion, and does not effectively punish disloyal subjects, he consequently creates an atmosphere where his subjects take the liberty to do what they please. “[…] for love is held by a chain of obligation which, men being selfish, is broken whenever it serves their purpose […]” Pg 90. Another important factor is to have friends and not to have friendships with foreign powers. Machiavelli tells how King Louis of made this mistake, “[…] he was forced to accept friendships he could find, and his schemes would have speedily been successful if he had made no mistake in his other proceedings.” Pg 40. A prince should always know a good amount of background information on the person he is making friendships with, to avoid having betrayals and such.

Furthermore, Machiavelli states some useful economic tips, such as whether it is better to be a miser or to spend money liberally. If a prince were to spend money liberally, he would deplete his resources and would be forced to heavily tax his people in hopes of renewing it. His people would then hate him causing a bad relation between ruler and subjects. “[…] if he wishes to maintain his name for liberality, to impose heavy taxes on his people, become extortionate, and do everything possible to obtain money. This will make his subjects begin to hate him […]” pg 86. If a prince were to be a miser, being thrifty and frugal will eventually have enough funds to defend against opposing threats and fund projects without having to tax the people excessively.
